Restoring Comfort and Control with Thermal Solutions After Major Floor at Smithtown Library: HVAC Overhaul

Overview

When a flash flood in August 2024 devastated Smithtown Library’s mechanical systems, time was of the essence. Klima New York partnered with Thermal Solutions, the project’s mechanical contractor, to rapidly supply and support the implementation of a new HVAC system—focused on speed, cost-effectiveness, reliability, and long-term design flexibility.

The Challenge

The flood left the library’s entire mechanical infrastructure inoperable, requiring a full HVAC system replacement under urgent conditions. Klima New York was brought in to supply the critical equipment and deliver expert controls integration to ensure a cohesive, high-performance system. Working alongside the mechanical contractor, Klima played a key role in meeting tight deadlines and high expectations for reliability, efficiency, and design.

The Solution

Klima New York worked closely with Thermal Solutions to deliver a fully integrated HVAC system tailored to the library’s layout and operational needs. The equipment package supplied by Klima included:

  1. LG Chiller and DFS Systems – Chosen for their compact footprint, energy efficiency, and proven reliability.
  2. VTS Air Handlers – Selected for their fast lead times, cost-effective pricing, and dependable performance,e and designed for effective ventilation and seamless integration with other system components.
  3. Hydronic Specialties Equipment – Including pumps, starters, and VFDs to enhance overall system performance while controlling costs.
  4. Klima Controls Integration – JCI and Honeywell platforms were integrated to centralize system control of the chiller, pumps, AHUs, and DFS systems.
  5. Klima coordinated directly with Thermal Solutions to ensure equipment delivery, setup, and controls commissioning were completed smoothly and on schedule.

Project Benefits

  1. Accelerated Implementation – Rapid equipment supply and streamlined coordination enabled on-time reopening.
  2. Cost-Effective Design – Equipment choices and integration strategies kept the project within budget without sacrificing quality.
  3. Reliable Infrastructure – Robust systems and centralized controls provide lasting performance and easier maintenance.
  4. Thoughtful Engineering – The entire system was designed for efficiency, flexibility, and long-term value.

Together, Klima New York and Thermal Solutions restored comfort and control to Smithtown Library—just in time for the grand reopening, with an HVAC system built to serve for years to come.

Maintaining Architectural Integrity through Heat Pump Installation

Objectives

Built from the ground up, 531 Avenue of the Americas is notable for its distinctive design. With such eye-catching curb appeal, the proper HVAC system needed to be installed while ensuring its lack of visibility from the outside. Thus, it was KLIMA’s mission to incorporate a high-performance, high-efficient heat pump system that fits in the building — all without compromising its architectural integrity.

Problems

The biggest challenge stemming from this project came from the condenser’s visibility. It was the client’s desire that the condenser remained obscured from view to maintain the visual and architectural appeal of the unique building. In turn, KLIMA had to come up with a Solution to fit 12 MV 5 and 2 MV S condensers inside of the bulkhead, which was enclosed with an architectural louver.

Solutions

With KLIMA’s ingenuity, we were able to fit 14 condensers inside of the bulkhead and enclose it with an architectural louver. These louvers were designed to have the required free area to accommodate the airflow needed for the condensers. KLIMA was ultimately successful in implementing a high-performance HVAC system, all while adhering to the client request of obscuring condensers and maintaining architectural integrity.

Benefits

  • Ultra High efficient HVAC system
  • Maintained visual/architectural aesthetic
  • Demonstrated KLIMA’s aptitude and ability to adapt to unique, challenging situations

At a Glance

Challenges

  • Maintaining curb/visual appeal

The client requested that 531 Avenue of the Americas’ aesthetics remain intact, thus requiring condensers to be installed discreetly.

  • Providing healthy indoor air quality

Condensers work to remove hot air from a building. Given the client’s request, KLIMA had to install condensers in a safe manner that allowed for healthy indoor air quality for all building occupants.

  • Implementing condensers in a safe manner

Since the condenser was to be obscured from view, KLIMA had come up with a unique method of implementing them into the HVAC structure.
